Bicyclist Killed in Traffic Accident in McKenzie

McKENZIE (June 5, 2026) — A 56-year-old Yuma, Tennessee man died in a bicycle-car accident on June 5 around 5 p.m.

First responders were dispatched to U.S. 79 (Highland Drive) at the intersection near Maverick' convenience store where they discovered Steven Gooch, 55, of Yuma injured after he rode his bicycle across U.S. 79 into the path of a northbound vehicle driven by Alec Meddlings, 33. They were no charges filed in the case.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol, McKenzie Police, McKenzie Fire and medical first responders, and Baptist EMS responded to the scene. The THP investigated the accident. 

Obituary

YUMA — Mr. Steven Ray Gooch, 55, of Yuma, Tennessee, died Friday, June 5, 2026, at Baptist Memorial Hospital.

A memorial visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, in the Cherrywood Room of Chase Funeral Home from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Mr. Gooch was born April 19, 1971, in Huntingdon, to the late Danny Ray Gooch and Betty Lou Crocker. He was a laborer.

He is survived by a brother, Billy Gooch (Nancy) of St. Joseph, Tennessee, a sister, Debbie Gooch, of Nashville, Tennessee, step mother, Marilyn Gooch, of Yuma, three step sisters, Tabitha Reynolds, Mary Willis, Sandy Pierce, nephews Nathaniel Mullen, Chase Mullen, Billy Martin, and his special friend, Geneva Tesneair.
