HUNTINGDON (July 18) — Citizens of Carroll County gathered downtown Saturday for a celebration of America's 250th birthday, sponsored by the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce.
One side of the square was blocked off for the event, bookended by fire trucks from Huntingdon and McKenzie with large American flags waving from their ladders.
The event opened with a parade of patriotic youngsters, led by Grand Marshal Moe Shamell, meteorologist at WBBJ-TV.
Shamell was also one of three judges for a homemade apple pie contest, along with Sheila Horne, Bethel University Director of University Admissions, and SSG Courtney Churchwell, Carroll County National Guard recruiter.
Ten pies were entered for judging on appearance, crust and taste. Winning first place was Mary Sturdivant, followed by Angie Martin in second place and Melissa Powell in third.
A program was presented on the steps of the courthouse, led by Chamber President Brad Hurley. The National Anthem was played, and Hurley delivered a prayer.
Huntingdon Mayor Chad Edwards welcomed everyone to the event, and Carroll County Mayor Joseph Butler presented a proclamation celebrating the nation's milestone and recognized veterans for their contributions and sacrifices.
McKenzie Mayor Ryan Griffin introduced the community choir, led by pianist Connie McCain. The choir, which included Griffin, performed "My Country 'Tis of Thee," "America the Beautiful" and "God Bless America."
Huntingdon Historical Society co-founder Johnny McClure recited a letter written from Thomas Jefferson to Washington, D.C. Mayor Roger Weightman in 1826 just days before his death on July 4 reflecting on the writing and signing of the Declaration of Independence 50 years prior.
Brent Bullock recited the Declaration to close the program.
Following the program, a hot dog-eating contest was held. Eight competitors vied to be the fastest to eat ten hot dogs. Finishing first was Dr. Dale Mathis. In second place was Mitchell Stembridge, and SSG Ed Humphries of the Tennessee National Guard was third.
Besides the scheduled events, there were plenty of games and activities to enjoy.
