Carroll County Residents Invited to “Walk Across Tennessee” Challenge

HUNTINGDON, Tenn. – Carroll County residents are invited to lace up their walking shoes and get moving this fall with the return of the Walk Across Tennessee challenge, sponsored locally by Carroll Bank and Trust and hosted by the UT Extension – Carroll County Office.

Walk Across Tennessee is an eight-week, team-based fitness challenge taking place September 20 through November 14. The goal is for teams to collectively walk the equivalent of the length of Tennessee—approximately 500 miles—or more during the challenge.

Teams are made up of six members, with one person serving as the team captain. Team members do not have to exercise together or even be in the same location. Participants can walk outdoors, use a treadmill, or take part in other eligible physical activities. Various activities can be converted to mileage using the program’s mileage conversion chart.

Each participant will report their weekly fitness miles to their team captain, who will submit the team’s totals. At the end of the eight weeks, the team that has traveled the farthest “across Tennessee” will be recognized as the challenge winner.

While there is a competitive aspect to the challenge, the ultimate goal is to encourage participants to become more physically active and develop a healthy habit of regular walking and exercise.

Anyone can participate. Teams can be made up of friends, family members, neighbors, coworkers, church members, school groups, or other community groups. Participants are encouraged to gather six people, come up with a unique team name, and register for the challenge.

“Walk Across Tennessee is a great way to make physical activity more fun by doing it with a team,” said Lacy Yeley, UT Extension Family and Consumer Sciences Agent. “You don’t have to be an experienced walker or athlete to participate. Every mile counts, and the goal is to encourage everyone to get moving and build a healthy habit along the way.”
