Construction Progresses on Atwood, Trezevant Bypass
From the Sep 17, 2024 e-Edition
TREZEVANT — The second of two segments of the new highway bypassing both Trezevant and Atwood is advancing with roadbed construction underway on opposite ends of¨ U.S. 79 bypass around Trezevant.
Dirt-moving equipment is starting at both ends of the second leg, ranging from State Route 70A near West Carroll High School in Atwood to Cutlip Lane, east of Trezevant.
Crews are putting the finishing touches on the first leg of construction that connects U.S. 79 outside of Milan and State Route 70-A near West Carroll High School, where it will terminate.
Tennessee Department of Transportation said the highway section is ahead of schedule and could possibly open in the fall of 2024. The original scheduled opening was May 2025.
Eventually, the expanded roadway will bypass both Atwood and Trezevant and then proceed to McKenzie to make one continuous four-lane or five contiguous lanes (with a middle turn lane).
The bypass around Atwood was the first in the Carroll County portion, to be followed by the bypass around Trezevant and last, the four-lane to McKenzie from Trezevant.
The project is being built by Delta Contracting Company.
