One of McKenzie’s newest businesses celebrated a big win on Saturday, July 6 at a nearby food competition.
Dem Cookiez owner and baker Lacey Prater won Second Place and a $500 prize in the Chesoli’s Race for Taste Competition in downtown Huntingdon. Her green watermelon cookie with pink icing and chocolate chip “seeds” delighted the judges’ eyes and taste buds.
But the young entrepreneur’s elation was quickly mixed with trepidation as she learned that Prater’s Taters, the Broadway business and building owned by her father Ed, from which Dem Cookiez operates, was closing immediately.
Fortunately for McKenzie’s sweet-toothed citizens, Lacey has no plans to close or relocate. Her (now award-winning) specialty cookies, handcrafted lemonades and iced coffees (a recent addition) will continue to be available.
Dem Cookiez is open Tuesday and Wednesday from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. and Thursday-Saturday from 11 a.m.-7 p.m.
The shop will stay open until 9 p.m. Thursday this week for Nights on Broadway.
