Dollar General Literacy Grant Supports Summer Reading at West Carroll Elementary

TREZEVANT — West Carroll Elementary School has received a Dollar General literacy grant to support its Summer Reading Program and expand the school library’s collection of books available to students.

Grant funds were used to purchase new books focused on the history and geography of the United States. The additions provide students with opportunities to explore American history while continuing to strengthen reading comprehension, vocabulary and overall literacy skills.

West Carroll Elementary also kept its library open throughout the summer, giving students continued access to books while school was not in session.

In recent years, West Carroll Elementary has challenged students to read 100 books or earn 100 Accelerated Reader points during the school year. During the 2025-26 school year, over 50 percent of students reached that goal.

That literacy focus will continue during the 2026-27 school year through the school’s Readers’ Detective Club theme. Teachers are using the theme to encourage students to approach reading with curiosity, explore new books and build their skills as readers.

West Carroll Elementary staff also recognized Dollar General’s support by purchasing and wearing the company’s yellow sunglasses, which are associated with its literacy fundraising efforts.

The school expressed its appreciation to Dollar General for its continued investment in literacy and for providing additional resources to support West Carroll Elementary students.
