HOPKINSVILLE — Flora Ellen Elmore Freeland, age 94, of Hopkinsville, Kentucky, formerly of McKenzie, Tenn., died on Saturday, August 2, 2025, at Jennie Stuart Medical Center of natural causes. Celebration of Life Service are 11 a.m. on Friday, August 8, 2025, at First United Methodist Church. Visitation will be at the church on Friday, August 8, 2025, from 9 a.m. until the service time at 11 a.m. Maddux-Fuqua-Hinton Funeral Home has been entrusted by the family to handle the arrangements.
Mrs. Freeland was born in Fayetteville, Tenn., on August 10, 1930, the daughter of the late Albert Hargis Elmore and Amy Meeks Elmore. She and her late husband owned several radio stations throughout Florida, Tennessee, Indiana, Illinois, and Alabama. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and then obtained a double master’s degree in business and a second master's degree in Speech and Communication.
She was a professor at Hopkinsville Community College, and CPA for the Oak Grove City Council. She served as chair of the Hopkinsville Community College Reaccreditation Committee by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Ellen served on the Board at Hopkinsville Public Library. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, where she was a part of the Women’s Bible Study and was a proud member of the Quilting Club of Hopkinsville.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Michael Rudolph Freeland in December of 2018, her son, Stephen Allen Freeland, and her sisters, Sue Higgins and Lois Chaplin.
Survivors include her sons, Michael R. Freeland, Jr. of Spearfish, South Dakota, Douglas Lee Freeland (Debbie) of Jackson, Tenn., David Elmore Freeland (Donna) of Whitehouse, Tenn.; her daughters, Patricia Sharon Freeland Poe (Patrick) of Vonore, Tenn., Cynthia Grey Symington of North Carolina; her brother, Tim Elmore of South Carolina; her sisters, Billie Rowell of Texas, Linda Childres of North Carolina; her brother-in-law, Jim Freeland of Kentucky; her treasured daughter-of-the-soul, Sheila Barnes of Hopkinsville; her ten grandchildren and fourteen great- grandchildren.

Trezevant Council Backtracks on Rezoning Vote
