Garry Mason Transformed Fishing Into a National Collegiate Sport
From the Apr 14, 2026 e-Edition
Garry Mason, a respected West Tennessee fishing guide with roots firmly planted in Paris, Tennessee, pioneered the nation’s first scholarship-based collegiate bass fishing program at Bethel University, creating a championship dynasty and fundamentally changing the sport forever. Long before collegiate bass fishing became one of America’s fastest-growing sports, Mason was building its foundation.
Mason spent decades learning the West Tennessee waters of Kentucky Lake and Reelfoot, establishing a reputation as one of the state’s most knowledgeable outdoorsmen. This passion for teaching and mentoring led him to launch Bethel University’s team, a groundbreaking idea that quickly earned national titles and produced some of the most successful young anglers in the country. His significant influence has led many to refer to him as the “John Wooden of college bass fishing,” a title earned through years of discipline, success, and leadership on the national level.
Mason’s contributions, however, reach far beyond weigh-ins and championships.
Together with his wife, Cindy, he founded the Legends of the Outdoors National Hall of Fame to preserve the stories and achievements of the icons who shaped America’s hunting and fishing traditions. Through this effort, Mason became not only a pioneering coach and guide but also a historian and storyteller of the outdoor lifestyle. His role was further cemented by his work in outdoor television, specifically with “Legends of the Outdoors TV,” which brought the lives of legendary sportsmen and women to audiences nationwide.
Those closest to Mason attest that his greatest impact remains the people he helped, including young anglers, guides, and future leaders. They learned from his example that the outdoors is about much more than competition; it is centered on respect, conservation, tradition, and legacy.
Today, Garry Mason remains one of the most influential figures in the history of bass fishing, inspiring the next generation every time they launch a boat.
