GLEASON (June 8) — Community members welcomed the reopening of the Gleason Memorial Library after a 10-month closure due to a wall collapsing.

Michella Wilson, librarian, said the adjacent building’s wall collapsed on August 14, 2023 and caused significant damage to the library.

City officials were meeting at the City Hall when they heard a loud noise leading them to discover the collapse and the damage at the library. Wilson said every book and shelf had to be removed and the community library closed.

Mayor Charles Anderson said the city’s insurance provider worked well with the city to restore the library. Damage totaled $83,000.

The restored facility is pristine, easy to navigate, and provides the community with access to local books and books through the Reelfoot Regional Library.

Wilson said the library is open to Gleason and the surrounding area. Operating hours are Monday-Friday, noon to 4 p.m. She thanked community members and members of the Gleason Women’s Club for their assistance.

Mayor Anderson is proud of the renovation and said there are “better days ahead.”
