McKENZIE (March 13) — Third and fourth-grade students from Gleason School visited Webb School Friday morning to learn about local Black history. Webb School alumni Ike Gilbert and Neal Williamson spoke to the students, giving them a brief history of the school before leading them into the museum room.

Standing in Webb School’s cafeteria-turned-gymnasium, Gilbert told students about some of Webb School’s notable alumni, many of whom still stay connected through the Webb Alumni Association.

Given the opportunity to ask questions, one student asked if Black and White kids could be friends before integration.

“A friend is a friend,” Gilbert said. “Just because we couldn’t go to school together didn’t make us not friends.”

In the museum room, students were especially excited to see the old technology on display but also took special interest in the many school pictures on the walls.
