Habitat for Humanity Dedicates Latest Home in McKenzie
From the Jul 21, 2026 e-Edition
McKENZIE (July 19) — The atmosphere was one of palpable joy on Walnut Street as the Habitat for Humanity of Carroll County held a dedication ceremony for its newest home, officially welcoming JayAnn Johnson as its owner.
The event drew supporters, including Habitat board members, construction volunteers, local church members and family, all gathering to celebrate a project that represented months of collaborative labor.
Rhonda Walsh, president of Habitat for Humanity of Carroll County, opened the ceremony with a warm tribute to Johnson, whom she described as a person of boundless enthusiasm. Walsh praised the effort that brought the house to fruition, noting that volunteers and contractors poured hundreds of hours into the build over the past several months. She highlighted a significant financial achievement for the project: through the dedicated work of volunteers and local business contributions, the organization saved over $75,000 in construction costs.
“Without all of you, we couldn’t do this,” Walsh told the gathered audience.
Following the opening remarks, Kassie Taylor, the Habitat office manager who oversees day-to-day operations, introduced Johnson. Taylor spoke of their shared journey over the last few years and reflected on the project’s origins, including the groundbreaking ceremony held in April. She spoke of Johnson’s enthusiasm and dedication to performing the requisite service hours.
The homeowner’s cousin, Reginald Caldwell, was among the family members who addressed the audience. Caldwell expressed deep happiness that Johnson had made the transition from apartment living to homeownership, noting that the entire family shared in her joy.
The emotional peak of the ceremony came when Johnson herself addressed the crowd. Attributing the home to divine providence, she quoted Psalm 127:1—”Except the Lord build the house, the labor is in vain”—and expressed awe at seeing the project completed ahead of schedule. She shared her gratitude with local church leaders and the volunteers she affectionately referred to as “my own children.” In her remarks, she extended a warm, signature invitation to her new neighbors and friends: “The door’s always open, so you can come and visit.”
The home itself measures 1,008 square feet. When Johnson finally unlocked the front door and stepped inside, her reaction was immediate and overwhelmingly joyful: “Oh my God. Oh my God. This is beautiful. This is beautiful. This is beautiful.”
The home was formally consecrated by Elder Samuel Perryman, who offered prayers for peace and protection over the dwelling.
After the blessing, Johnson received traditional Habitat gifts, including a new family Bible and a home pin, before unlocking the front door to see her new residence for the first time.
The house will soon be fully furnished with help from volunteers and items sourced from the Habitat ReStore in Huntingdon. Following the dedication, attendees were invited to tour the home, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the Johnson family in McKenzie.
