Huntingdon Improves to 3-1 with Win Over Crockett County

ALAMO (September 20) — The Huntingdon Mustangs made the trek to Alamo, Tennessee on Friday night as they battled the 4A Crockett County Cavaliers. Despite hot and muggy conditions, the Mustangs came away with the week five win, 28-21.
In a game that resembled a tug-a-war match, it took four quarters of play to decide a clear winner. At the end of the first quarter, Huntingdon trailed 7-6. By halftime, the Mustangs led the Cavaliers 21-14 but a scoreless third quarter made it anyone’s ball game. Early in the fourth quarter, Huntingdon scored to lead by two touchdowns. With four minutes to play, Crockett County cut into the lead 28-21 but time was on the side of the Mustangs who managed to clock and finish the game in the victory formation.
Looking at the numbers, Huntingdon ran 46 plays picking up 16 first downs (15 on the ground and 1 passing. Crockett County ran 34 plays picking up 9 first downs. The Mustangs had 375 total yards while the Cavaliers had 368 total yards. On the ground, Huntingdon had 365 yards with Brady Warbritton leading the pack with 192 yards and Gray Eubanks had 162. The Mustang defense held the Cavaliers to 18 rushing yards while in passing Ben Burgess was 12-20 for 350 yards with three touchdowns and one interception.
In the first quarter, on their first offensive play, Crockett County went 68 yards for the touchdown on a swing pass from Burgess to Deuce Greenhill. Avery Hurst tacked on the extra point as the Cavaliers took the early lead.
Huntingdon was quick to respond. On the kickoff, Tyreke Hutch went 98 yards for the Mustang touchdown. A bad snap led to the missed extra point, this was the first miss for Greyson Anderson on the season. After 37 seconds of play, the Cavaliers led 7-6.
Crockett County moved the ball downfield on their next drive. After crossing midfield and stopping on the opposing 31 yard line, Hutch was able to pick off a pass from Burgess.
Huntingdon was able to capitalize on the turnover.
To start the second quarter, the Mustangs received a punt and took over at the five yard line. A series of strong runs from Eubanks, Warbritton and Aiden Hilliard put Huntingdon inside the red zone. On third-and-goal from the one, Eubanks punched through the defense for the touchdown. Eubanks got the call on the two-point conversion and the Mustangs led 14-7 with 3:15 to play in the half.
The Cavaliers were quick to respond. On second-and-nine from the 18 yard line, Burgess hit Greenhill on the slant for the 82-yard touchdown. Hurst had added the PAT as things were tied 14-14 with 2:25 remaining in the first half.
On the next offensive series, Eubanks’ pass was intercepted by Ian Greenberg. With less than a minute to play, Crockett County turned the ball over on downs. 31 seconds later, Warbritton was in for the 63-yard touchdown. Anderson’s extra point put Huntingdon up 21-14 at the half.
The third quarter of play was a back-and-forth dominated by the defense.
In the fourth quarter, Warbritton scored his second long touchdown from 62 yards at the 10:41 mark. Anderson’s PAT put the Mustangs up 28-14.
A big sack by the Eubanks brothers, Gray and Hayes, stopped a Cavalier drive on the next series.
Crockett County continued to fight and scored their final points of the night with 4:11 left to play. Hurst nailed his third PAT as Huntingdon remained on top 28-21.
Next Friday night, September 27, the Mustangs host the Milan Bulldogs in a Region 6- 2A challenge. The Bulldogs go into the challenge with a 4-1 record after their region 47-38 loss to Jackson Central Merry, who the Mustangs will host on October 11.
