Huntingdon Rolls Over Union City Tornadoes

HUNTINGDON (October 30) — The Huntingdon Mustangs finished the regular season Thursday night at Paul Ward Stadium as they defeated Union City 42-0. With the win, the Mustangs finish the regular season 9-1 and 5-1 in Region 7-2A. The win over the Golden Tornadoes gave the Mustangs a #2 seed in the playoffs and a home game against Memphis Business School to open the playoffs next Friday.

The win over Union City marked the 170 career victory for head coach Eric Swenson at Huntingdon, passing Coach Paul Ward and making Swenson the all-time winningest football coach. Prior to serving as head coach at Huntingdon, Swenson spent three years at Hickman County; his overall coaching record is 188-67.

The Mustangs started quickly against the Tornadoes and sprinted to a 35-0 lead at the half. Huntingdon scored on its first possession of the game after Union City tried an onside kick to start the game. The Mustangs recovered the ball at the Tornado 48 and scored in five plays as Tyreke Hutch raced 29 yards for the score. Greyson Anderson gave the Mustangs a 7-0 lead.

DJ Armor then recovered a Union City fumble at the Tornado 31, and Braylin Dearmon scored the first of his three touchdowns on the night with a one-yard run. Anderson tacked on the point after, and the score was 14-0.

It took less than a minute before Huntingdon was back in the end zone once again as Union City threw a pass on second down that Huntingdon’s Lucas Smith intercepted at the Tornado 25 and ran it back for a touchdown with six minutes left in the first quarter. Anderson was true on the PAT, and the lead grew to 21-0.

The Mustangs started their next possession at their own 20, after Union City turned the ball over on downs. Huntingdon covered the 80 yards in nine plays and scored on a Dearmon 29-yard run with 8:15 left in the second quarter. Anderson booted through the point after, and the Mustangs led 28-0.

Union City started at their 12 on the ensuing kickoff, and Broox Bennett, who led the Mustangs in tackles with 10 for the game, forced a fumble and recovered the ball at the Union City five. Two plays later, Dearmon bulled his way in from the one, and Huntingdon, with Anderson’s extra point kick, held a 35-0 lead at the half.

The second half was played with a running clock, and the only score came from the Mustang reserves on a 66-yard run by sophomore Colt Wood. Ethan Raffield kicked the point after, and the Mustangs would earn a 42-0 win over the Tornadoes.

The Mustangs rushed for 222 yards in the game and passed for seven. Dearmon led all rushers with 72 yards on nine carries and three scores. Wood ran twice for 69 yards and a score; Hutch had four carries for 37 yards and a TD.

Huntingdon held Union City to 66 yards rushing and passed 3 of 14 attempts for 20 yards in the game.
