Huntingdon Sweeps McKenzie

McKENZIE (January 27) — The storied rivalry continued Monday as McKenzie High School hosted Huntingdon for a pair of basketball contests, their first meeting of the season. The Fillies pulled away in the second quarter en route to a 67-35 win. The Rebels took an early lead, but the Mustangs had the edge down the stretch to claim an 86-79 victory.
Huntingdon Fillies 67, McKenzie Lady Rebels 35
The Fillies had a 15-12 edge after the opening frame, led by Sara Beth Smith with ten points. Quinn Kelley hit a three-pointer, and Josey Stokes had a pair. Lady Rebel Jaycee Stafford scored five points with a three. Braylin Auvenshine had four points, and Molly French hit a three-pointer.
Huntingdon opened up the lead with a 23-3 advantage in the second quarter, led by Byars with ten points. Smith scored six, and Kelley hit another three-pointer. Stokes and Grier Bartholomew each had a pair. Lady Rebel Ava Hastings hit a three-pointer. At the half, Huntingdon led 38-15.
The Fillies enjoyed a 21-14 tilt in the third, led by Knox Bennett with seven points, including a three. Smith scored six points, Kelley and Emalynn Maness each hit a three, and Byars added a pair. Hastings led McKenzie with nine points on a trio of threes. Stafford also hit a three, and Auvenshine added a pair. Entering the final frame, the Fillies led 59-29.
Huntingdon capped the win in a quick, 8-6 fourth. Maness and Ellie Wilson each scored four for the Fillies, and Hastings and French each hit a three-pointer for the Lady Rebels.
Filly Sara Beth Smith led all scorers with 22 points. Delaney Byars scored a dozen, and Quinn Kelley had nine points on a trio of threes.
Ava Hastings led McKenzie with 15 points on five three-pointers. Jaycee Stafford scored eight with a pair of threes.
Mustangs 86, Rebels 79
McKenzie had a 19-12 lead after the first frame, led by Cole Brown with eight points, including a pair of threes. Carter Kee scored five with a three, Craegen Travis had four points, and Tate Surber had a pair. Mustang Bryson Whiteside scored five with a three. Braylin Dearmon had four points, and Caleb Ezell scored three points.
Huntingdon took the lead with a 24-16 advantage in the second quarter, led by Kenton Smith with ten points. Ezell scored seven with a three, Dearmon had four points, and Hayes Eubanks hit a three-pointer. Surber led McKenzie with nine points, including a three. Kee scored four, and Eli Vinson hit a three-pointer. At the half, Huntingdon led 36-35.
The Mustangs enjoyed a 24-20 tilt in the third, led by Smith with seven points. Ezell, Dearmon and E.J. Lewis each scored five, Ezell and Lewis with a three. Eubanks added a pair. Surber led the Rebels with seven points. Kee scored four, and C. Brown had three points. Vinson, Travis and Landon Brown each had a pair. Heading into the final frame, the Mustangs led 60-55.
Huntingdon sealed the win with a 26-24 edge in the fourth, led by Smith with nine points. Ezell scored eight, Whiteside had five points, and Dearmon scored four. Surber led McKenzie with 13 points. Kee scored six with a three, and C. Brown had five points with a three-pointer.
Rebel Tate Surber led all scorers with 31 points, including a three. Carter Kee scored 19 with a pair of threes, and Cole Brown had 16 points with a trio of threes.
Kenton Smith led the Mustangs with 26 points. Caleb Ezell scored 23 with a pair of threes. Braylin Dearmon had 17 points.
