Jackson Symphony Opens Nights on Broadway
From the Jun 11, 2024 e-Edition
McKENZIE — The Jackson Symphony — Symphony on the Move was the opening event for the annual series Nights on Broadway on Friday. The small ensemble of musicians provided jazz music for an appreciative audience, who were seated in Veterans Park.
One of the musicians was Dr. Keith Herris, a music professor at Bethel University.
Symphony on the Move concerts were created as a way to take music to communities and neighborhoods during the COVID-19 pandemic. Recognizing the desire for arts opportunities as well as the need for professional musicians to play, The Jackson Symphony took concerts directly to the audience.
In fact, the National Endowment for the Arts has recognized the cultural impact of the tour by awarding The Jackson Symphony its prestigious Challenge America grant in 2022, one of fewer than 200 arts organizations in the United States to receive the award.
