McKENZIE — Carroll County General Sessions Judge Michael King was the featured speaker at the Rotary Club of McKenzie on April 15.

Judge King discussed some of the recent changes in the courthouse and the court system. Notably, security systems at the courthouse have been enhanced to better protect defendants, jury members, the public, and court officers.

He also mentioned the creation of a vape class for juvenile offenders, emphasizing that it is illegal for individuals under the age of 21 to use tobacco, vape, or consume alcoholic beverages.

Carroll Academy continues its educational efforts for school-aged offenders. This court-operated institution aims to shape children through discipline and education while ensuring they attend school.

A new program called Court-Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) has been introduced in Carroll County to support children involved in the court system for various reasons. CASA advocates work in the best interest of these children and report directly to the judge.

Additionally, Judge King has implemented stricter penalties for parents or guardians of children who are truant from school.
