Lady Rebels Sweep Martin for First Program Victory
From the Mar 17, 2026 e-Edition
McKENZIE (March 12) — McKenzie Middle School’s newest athletic program, volleyball, earned its first win Thursday, sweeping Martin Middle School in straight sets.
Both sets were competitive and thrilling. The Lady Rebels took the first set, 25-19, but fell way behind to start the second set. Rather than give up and move on to a decisive third set, they battled back and tied the set at 13-13. After much back-and-forth, McKenzie gained the momentum late in the set for a 25-21 win and a match victory.
Lady Rebel Serenity Bobo had eight aces and a kill. Willow Stenberg had eight aces, three kills and a dig. Macy Brooks had seven aces. Madilyn Milam had three kills. Charlie Cassidy had an ace and two assists. Abby Carroll had one kill.
Following the historic win, Head Coach Hannah Whitworth told The Banner, “Our middle school volleyball team earned their first win tonight in the very first season of our program, and it was such a special moment for these girls, as well as Coach J[Jordan Jowers] and I. None of them had ever played volleyball before this year, but they’ve shown incredible determination, heart and a willingness to learn every single day.
“It took time, patience and a lot of hard work, but tonight they proved that persistence pays off. I’m so proud of how they’ve grown as players and as teammates, and this win means a lot for the future of our program!”
The Lady Rebels will complete their inaugural season Tuesday, March 31 at home against Henry County and celebrate Eighth Grade Night.
