Lakeside Senior Living News
From the Dec 3, 2024 e-EditionGreetings,
November was a month of counting blessings. We exercise three times a week, and we closed each session by saying something we were thankful for. It was a great reminder that our cups runneth over (Psalms 23). We had the honor of thanking some very special residents on Veterans Day.
We recognized Army Sgt. Carol Sierling Murphy - Korean, Army Corporal Carl Applegate - Radar Tech- Korean, Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Sammy Scruggs - Vietnam (VA Home), Marine Sgt. E4 Harry A Walch, Marine Sgt. E5 Bill Byars - Vietnam (posthumous June 2024) and Air Force Air Policeman Elbert Hatley - Korean/Vietnam. Residents created a wall of hand-crafted poppies and adorned the room with Americana decorations. Front and center the American flag flew.
Lillian Brown, who participated in the middle school program came and led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and presented the origin of military Taps and music. Sheila Willis read In Flanders Fields. We played patriotic music and presented each veteran with a candle gift to remember the warm glow of home. Recognizing also the family who stood steadfast stateside awaiting their soldiers’ return. Check out photos on Facebook-Lakeside Senior Living.
Another opportunity arose for Thanksgiving as we celebrated November birthdays: Steve Jackson, Clark Brown, Norman Maggard and Harry Walsh. Evelyn Coleman celebrated her 90th with a party attended by family and friends. Lena Morgan celebrated her 95th with her family bringing a beautifully decorated red rose cake for all the residents and staff to enjoy. Each day and each year is a gift.
We always enjoy the volunteers who faithfully come to visit and entertain us and this month we welcomed a new group. Larry Moore and Corey Bridges came and played music and sang for us and we all had so much fun they said add them to our calendar. Speaking of calendars, it is so hard to cover everything we do in this article, but we have the calendar posted on our website lakesidesenior.com each month and printed copies are available in our front lobby.
We have been so inspired by the volunteers who come here that we decided we needed to pay it forward. We created the Lakeside Choir. We have put together a holiday program of stories, songs and a small gift. The ladies spent a few afternoons making gifts and we have been practicing faithfully so if you see the Lakeside van going down the road full of elves, reindeer and Santas, it’s just us spreading some Christmas joy. I look forward to telling you where all we visited next month.
We will also have a Christmas Open House-Santas Sweet Shop on December 22 from 1-3 p.m.
Speaking of the bus, we kept the road hot this month. We visited the Amish store, Sweet Jordans, Dairy Queen, Dollar Tree, Save-A-Lot, Dollar General, Factory Connection, Bobby Gees and the Senior Dance in Huntingdon at the Civic Center. They had a potluck vegetable soup and our wonderful kitchen staff made cornbread muffins for us to contribute. And we went to the movies, where we saw Here starring Tom Hanks. Each month they have a senior day movie and $5 gets your ticket, popcorn and drink. We thank the city for providing this opportunity.
On Thanksgiving, the kitchen served a delicious traditional holiday meal. Some went home with family and others had family join them here for lunch. We also took part in the Thanksgiving traditions of the Macy’s Day Parade, football games and the much-needed afternoon nap. We look forward to the gift of December.
-Until Next Time…
