Greetings, On February first we got ahead of Punxsutawney Phil with our own Groundhog Day Predictions. Residents received a pack of Chocolatey Oreos and a pack of Vanilla Oreos representing a shadow and no shadow and was to eat one saving their prediction cookie to eat the next day after he made his prediction. I hope most ate the chocolate one and saved the vanilla for no shadow because early Spring was predicted.

Love is always in the air here at Lakeside Senior Living but in February we celebrate it as much as we can. On the first of the month residents cast their votes for the Lakeside King and Queen. Earl Ray Kee was selected as our King and Peggy Work was selected as Queen. We celebrated the whole week, Monday, we played Colored Dimes and Hi-Lo Card Sprint for Cupid Prizes. Tuesday, we celebrated Peppermint Patty Day with Peppermint Patty Candies, Fun Facts and mini cartoon strips featuring her unrequited crush on Charlie Brown. Wednesday, we played Valentine XOXO BINGO, and Thursday we crafted a tinsel heart arch for the crowning of our King and Queen. Friday was the big day, and we celebrated with a Crowning Party where each winner received a gold crown/tiara, gold cape and gifts from TN Quality Care. The Queen also received a beautiful bouquet of pink roses. Our Dietary served a “Lady and The Tramp” classic of long noodle spaghetti, and we had heart shaped cake with vanilla Ice Cream. For our party we had Cupid floats and heart shaped chocolate chip cookies. We set up our Human Slot Machine-Reels of Love and if residents upon spinning matched 3 boxes of chocolate hearts they got to come to the Love Shack table and pick out pieces of jewelry, billfolds and bags of chocolate candies. We also received beautifully colored and handwritten valentines from McKenzie Elementary 1st and 2nd Grade classes. We want to Thank them for this lovely and thoughtful gesture towards our residents. A group of Delta Phi Nu ladies from Bethel University visited delivering cupcakes and sweet treats and made in room visits to those who were not in attendance at the party and serenaded them with some lovely tunes.

Both the ladies and the men here love sports. Many of them played sports when they were in school, their children played and now have grandchildren who play. We follow local games through streamed TV, newspapers and local radio so it was no surprise that the Super Bowl was highly anticipated. Some watched the game, some watched commercials, some for entertainment and others for the food. Our Kitchen staff served an array of pizzas with an early start time so that we could be ready to hear the anthem and see the kick-off. Chips and sodas were served as a halftime snack. Congratulations to The Philadelphia Eagles, the LIX Super Bowl Champions.

We celebrated Black History Month with a host of trivia, crosswords and word search puzzles. And Presidents Day with a Guess the Prez. Guessing Game. Lakeside Birthdays recognized this month were Julie Garner, Carol French and William Smith.

A TN-SHIP representative came to share a Sr. Medicare Patrol Presentation with information to keep identity safe and protected. Avoiding falling prey to Medicare fraud and other known scams where the elderly population is targeted. Power is knowledge and we appreciate them keeping us informed. In the spirit of staying informed, a few residents attended a Healthy Heart Luncheon at Baptist Hospital where we received vital heart and stroke prevention information, warning signs to look for and a demo for using electric shock & CPR in emergency situations.

We had our 2nd meeting for the Grief Support that is sponsored by the Chaplin Group of Baptist Hospice. If you would like to attend, we meet at 6:30 on the 3rd Thursday of each month. There is no charge, and it is free to the public.

The Jackson Symphony performed The Magic Flute at UTM and made a stop by Lakeside on their way back to Jackson to perform for our residents. Residents were encouraged to ask friends and family to join in this special event. This was such a treat, and we can’t thank them enough for thinking of us.

Each month the residents, along with the Activity Director, discuss upcoming events and outings they would like to participate in and oddly enough this usually falls on a food celebration day so since it was national sticky bun day we just had to have this yummy, sweet treat. If you have an event that you think would be fun, educational or entertaining for our outgoing seniors please contact us at 731-352-4567 and share the information.

Spring is coming and we are a group of busy bees.

Until Next Time....
