BOSTON (April 15) — McKenzie’s Mark Smith participated in the 128th Boston Marathon and completed the 26.2-mile race in less than three hours with an average pace of 6:49 per mile. This is an incredible feat considering that the average marathon time for men is approximately 4 hours and 21 minutes, and for women is around 4 hours and 48 minutes.

The Boston Marathon, which started in 1897, is the world’s oldest annual marathon and is one of the most famous road racing events. The race has an average of 30,000 participants each year and attracts around 500,000 spectators along the 26.2-mile route. The race is unique in that not everyone can participate. To take part, an individual must qualify by completing a marathon in a specific time based on their age and gender within 18 months before the race. Qualifying for the Boston Marathon is an achievement in itself, and runners from all over the world come to participate.

The course is challenging due to the hills, and one of the most challenging hills is known as “Heartbreak Hill.” To qualify for the Boston Marathon, Smith ran in the Muddy River Marathon in May 2023, which takes place in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. He completed the race with a time of 2:55:24, an average pace of 6:42 per mile, and finished as the third-place male overall.
