McKENZIE (June 17) — The McKenzie Chamber of Commerce hosted its annual banquet Tuesday at Bethel University's Vera Low Center.

Chamber Executive Director Monica Heath served as emcee and welcomed the over 180 guests. Mayor Ryan Griffin blessed the meal, which was provided by the Bethel cafeteria.

After dinner, Heath offered a look back at "a dynamic and impactful year," recapping the events, accomplishments and opportunities made possible by the Chamber members, "the people and organizations that make our community exceptional."

She said, "None of this is possible without you. Your membership and sponsorship investments directly fund the work we do–events, training, advertising and community-building… It takes both money and time to make these events successful, and we're grateful for every way you contribute. Together, we are creating momentum for McKenzie's future. And tonight, we celebrate that."

Heath then turned to the awards presentation. "These award winners were nominated and selected because they go above and beyond—not just in their own work, but in how they lift up the people and places around them. These four outstanding recipients' work reflects the best of McKenzie—leadership, service, growth and heart."

Chamber President Jason Martin presented the first award, Businessperson of the Year, to Cindy Gaylord, saying, "Cindy, your energy, commitment and leadership have set the bar high–not just for your business, but for all of us. Thank you for making McKenzie stronger through your example."

Board member Matt Aird presented the Business of the Year Award to The McKenzie Banner and owners Jason and Brittany Martin. Aird said, "From telling our stories to championing local events, The McKenzie Banner plays an essential role in keeping our community informed and united. Their internal culture is just as strong, with a focus on investing in people and values at every step."

Chamber Secretary/Treasurer Shawna Fowler presented the award for Nonprofit of the Year to Beta Sigma Phi. Numerous members of the organization were present to accept the honor. Fowler said, "Beta Sigma Phi continues to uplift McKenzie through meaningful community efforts, teamwork and heart. You live out your mission beautifully. Thank you for all you do."

Heath presented the Chamber Champion award to Bethel University. Accepting the award were Dr. Lougan Bishop and Dr. Wayne Scott. Heath said, "Bethel has been an unwavering supporter of the business community, a connector of people and a true partner in progress. We are grateful for your engagement and leadership."

Heath presented a plaque to Martin for his service as president. She said, "Tonight, we honor Jason Martin for his exceptional leadership, tireless efforts and genuine passion for making McKenzie a stronger place for businesses and residents alike."

Martin then introduced keynote speaker Chris Nelson, head coach of the Bethel Lady Wildcats Basketball team, "a true pillar of our community and a legendary figure in women's collegiate basketball."

Nelson is entering his 19th season at the helm with 13 NAIA Tournament appearances, including the program's first-ever semifinals appearance this spring. He is a two-time NAIA Division I Women's Basketball Coach of the Year (2020, 2025).

Martin said, "A proud graduate of Bethel University, Coach Nelson's roots run deep in this community. He began coaching as a college sophomore and has since dedicated nearly two decades to shaping young athletes both on and off the court."

Coach Nelson offered some useful wisdom for business and life in general as well as some insight into his program and the role the community plays.

"Life's a lot more fun when you care about other people," he said.

Nelson spoke about the community's support and presence when the team hosted the first two rounds of the 2025 NAIA Tournament. He flipped a popular song lyric, "Put on for your city," saying, "Our city put on for us."

He said the driving factor for the team wasn't the trophy, "It was the impact on our community."

The coach offered advice to the many businesspersons present on handling customer complaints. He suggested positivity, listening, gathering all of the facts and putting one's self in the other's shoes. Staying calm, apologizing and agreeing on next steps, he said, would help "future-proof" the business against repeating the same mistake. "If you deal with a complaint successfully, it turns from a negative to a positive."

Heath gave closing remarks, "Tonight was about more than achievements, it was about the connections we build, the support we give each other and the shared commitment to make this community a better place to live, work and grow… Let's carry this momentum forward into 2025 with renewed energy and purpose. Together, there's no limit to what McKenzie can achieve."

Sponsors for the event were Allegion, Centennial Bank, Carroll Bank & Trust, McKenzie Industrial Development Board and Hometown Health Clinic.
