McKenzie Dominates Obion County in Scrimmage
From the Aug 4, 2026 e-Edition
McKENZIE (July 31) — McKenzie High School hosted Obion County Central Friday evening for an all-Rebel scrimmage at the MHS practice field. The host Rebels looked strong on both sides of the ball, especially during the varsity portion of the contest.
McKenzie's varsity scored on all four of its possessions and held Obion County scoreless on all four of theirs. The offenses started drives on the 30 yard line and were guaranteed four plays before normal four-down rules applied. Play was untimed.
Obion County's first possession ended after the minimum eight plays. McKenzie's defense made a strong opening statement, including a sack by Cayden Gordon.
McKenzie scored on six plays in its first drive, led by Jayden Callis with two strong runs, including a long touchdown. Lelan Gordon also had a solid carry, and quarterback Cole Brown had a completion to Avery Brown. Jony Hernandez kicked the PAT.
Obion County came up empty again, with losses during the four "free" plays and few yards gained on the next three. A host of McKenzie Rebels sacked the visiting quarterback on fourth down to punctuate the stop.
McKenzie needed eight plays to score again. Callis had another solid pair of runs, and C. Brown connected with A. Brown twice, the latter for an 18-yard touchdown. Hernandez hit the PAT.
The host Rebels smothered their visiting counterparts again. Callis, C. Gordon and Aiden Carrington each had a sack.
The next McKenzie drive started with a keep by C. Brown for 12 yards. The offense stumbled briefly before L. Gordon and Callis got the run game back on track. C. Brown had two more throws to A. Brown, including another touchdown. Hernandez added a third-straight extra point.
Obion County again failed to gain any traction on offense.
McKenzie's varsity capped their night with a final scoring drive, highlighted by tosses from C. Brown to Kason Brown and Jacobi Melton to set up a first-and-goal. Carrington carried twice to put it in the end zone. Hernandez completed a perfect night of PATs.
Obion County's junior varsity offense fared no better on their first possession. McKenzie's Jacion Townes made a great tackle for a loss, and Ashli Winston recovered a fumble.
McKenzie sophomore Parker Ross and freshman Seth Stafford both took snaps at quarterback. Bryson Smith, Leighem Broyles and Hudson Garrett also had touches, but the JV failed to score on first attempt.
The host Rebels got the ball back quickly and scored on a good run by Smith and two passes from Stafford to Garrett.
Obion County's final possession was stifled by a sack by McKenzie's Dierks Gyhers and a tackle for a loss by Stafford.
Stafford scored on a long keeper to end the scrimmage.
McKenzie completes its home preseason schedule Friday, August 7 with a scrimmage against Lexington at Bethel University at 6 p.m.
The Rebels travel to the Henry County High School Football Jamboree on Friday, August 14. They face McCracken County at 7 p.m.
