McKENZIE (May 18) — Seventy-eight seniors became alumni following commencement at McKenzie High School at 3 p.m., Sunday, May 18.
Inside the school’s gymnasium, the tradition of marching in two-by-two to the sound of “Pomp and Circumstance” continued as family members and friends looked on.
Lydia Pate led the attendees in the Pledge of Allegiance, Class President Emma Smith presented the welcome address, Allyson Gibson provided the Salutatory Address, and Briley Arnold provided the Valedictory Address.
MHS Principal Kelly Spivey spoke of the achievements of class members and the number of students who planned to enter a institution of higher education, continue their education at a trade school, enter the military, or enter the workforce. Spivey announced the total scholarship funds achieved was approximately $2,326,000.
Each student crossed the elevated platform as his or her name was announced.
The diplomas were presented by Dr. Justin Barden, director of schools, School Counselor Ashley Lowe, and LaShonda Williams, chairman of the McKenzie Special School District Board of Education.
Following the presentation of diplomas, Mr. Spivey instructed seniors to change their tassels from right to left to signify their graduation. Following the playing of the Alma Mater, students tossed their caps in the area in celebration and exited the gymnasium.
