McKenzie Middle School Hosts Annual Jamboree

McKENZIE (August 1) — McKenzie Middle School hosted its annual football jamboree Saturday evening with 12 teams participating in eight scrimmages, played two at a time on a split field.

McKenzie Rebels 28, Greenfield Yellowjackets 0

The host Rebels were dominant on both sides of the ball against Greenfield.

The Yellowjackets went four-and-out on their first possession.

The Rebels made a strong opening statement with a quick scoring drive. Navadius Owens had a long carry, followed up by a 23-yard touchdown by quarterback Kendon Coleman on a keeper. Payton Cox kicked the PAT, and McKenzie led 7-0.

The McKenzie defense forced another four-and-out on Greenfield's second drive.

The Rebel offense wasted no time, scoring quickly on a 38-yard run by Mahkyn Gilbert. Cox added the extra point for a 14-0 MMS lead.

The Yellowjackets failed to gain momentum again and quickly turned the ball over.

Owens got McKenzie on the board again with a 39-yard touchdown. Cox kicked, and the Rebels led 21-0.

Greenfield managed a first down on the ensuing drive, but Owens came down with an interception to end the possession.

Gilbert had a couple of solid runs for McKenzie, including a 20-yard touchdown. Cox made it 4-for-4 on PATs, and the Rebels led 28-0.

Another Yellowjacket possession ended with an interception, this time by Rebel Thomas Howard.

McKenzie fumbled on the ensuing possession, but time expired soon after Greenfield took over.

Inman Bulldogs 12, Lexington Minutemen 12

Lexington and Inman proved evenly-matched with a back-and-forth scrimmage.

A Minutemen fumble ended a promising first drive, and the Bulldogs scored quickly in response. The two-point conversion attempt failed, and Inman led 6-0.

Both teams stumbled on their second possessions, then Lexington scored. A failed two-point try left the score tied at 6-6.

Inman scored on the first play of the ensuing drive to regain the lead, but again failed to convert for two points.

The Minutemen scored on a lengthy drive to tie the game at 12-12, but a penalty doomed the go-ahead two-point try.

Inman managed a first down before time expired.

JV: Greenfield Yellowjackets 20, McKenzie Rebels 16

The host Rebels's junior varsity squad started strong and took a two-score lead, but the Yellowjackets stormed back late to claim the win.

Greenfield managed two first downs on the opening possession, but stalled.

Rebel James Barnhart had several strong carries and scored a five-yard touchdown. Quarterback Cord Wall threw to Howard for two points and an 8-0 lead.

McKenzie got the ball back and scored again quickly on multiple carries by Cash Edmonson, who also ran in for two points. The Rebels led 16-0.

Greenfield got on the board with a quick touchdown. The two-point try failed, and McKenzie led, 16-6.

A couple of wayward snaps and a fumble doomed the Rebels' drive to a four-and-out.

The Yellowjackets scored another quick touchdown and added two points to cut the deficit to 16-14, then got the ball back again with time running out and scored the go-ahead touchdown as time expired.

JV: Milan Bulldogs 14, Lexington Minutemen 6

Defense ruled the first few possessions, but eventually Milan broke through for a touchdown. The two-point conversion failed, and the Bulldogs led 6-0.

The Bulldogs followed with another score, this time converting for two points and a 14-0 lead.

In the waning minutes, Lexington mustered a touchdown, but no two-point conversion.

Milan Bulldogs 14, Henderson North Cadets 6

Milan's varsity squad overcame several turnovers to claim victory over the Cadets.

The Bulldogs struck first, but couldn't convert for two and led 6-0.

Back-to-back turnovers, an interception and a fumble opened the door for a Cadet touchdown. A failed point-after kept the score tied at 6-6.

Milan regained the lead with time running low and converted for two points for the 14-6 win.

Waverly Tigers 22, Gibson County Pioneers 8

Waverly stormed back from an early deficit with 22 unanswered points for the victory.

Gibson County struck first on a fourth-and-goal and converted for two points and an 8-0 lead.

The Tigers answered quickly to tie the contest at 8-8.

A Pioneer turnover gave Waverly a window to pull ahead 14-8 with a touchdown and two-point conversion.

Gibson County earned a pair of first downs, but stalled and turned the ball over on downs.

The Tigers added to their lead with a late touchdown and two-point conversion.

West Carroll War Eagles 24, Gleason Bulldogs 14

West Carroll was in control early, but Gleason gained some late momentum and made it a contest.

War Eagle Isaiah Lott scored on the opening drive. The two-point try failed, but West Carroll led 6-0.

Gleason earned a first down on the ensuing possession, but a fumble doomed the drive.

A pass from Ryker Cherry to Ayden Taylor set up another Lott touchdown run. The conversion was unsuccessful, and the War Eagles led 12-0.

Bulldog Landon Aeschbacher had a solid carry to set up a first-and-goal, but a penalty and another fumble ended the drive.

Two possessions later, Gleason got on the board with a Jase Dilday touchdown. With the two-point conversion, the deficit was cut to 12-8.

West Carroll's Kevin Pryor scored on a long run to extend the lead, but the two-point try failed again. The War Eagles led 18-8.

After a third Gleason fumble, Cherry threw to Taylor again for another West Carroll touchdown and a 24-8 lead.

Dilday scored again for the Bulldogs as time expired for the 24-14 final.

Dresden Lions 30, Camden Lions 6

Dresden dominated Camden throughout the scrimmage, but Camden managed a late touchdown to avoid the shutout.

Dresden scored on the opening drive but failed to convert for two.

After a Camden four-and-out, Dresden added another score. A successful two-point try made it 14-0.

Two possessions later, Dresden added another TD and two-point conversion for a 22-0 lead.

Camden went four-and-out again, and Dresden answered with another touchdown and conversion to push the lead to 30-0.

With time running low, Camden put together a scoring drive. The two-point try failed, but the shutout was avoided.
