Justin Melton Honored for Racing Championship
From the Oct 1, 2024 e-Edition
GLEASON (September 25) — Justin Melton of Gleason is a national champion driver for dragsters. Besides the national recognition he received in 2015, that honor will be remembered as motorists enter Gleason.
Damon Chandler, a longtime friend of Melton, arranged for the signs to be printed and for the city to agree to display the signs.
It reads “2015 World Champion PDRA Top Dragster, #1 in Final Season Points, Justin Melton.
Melton built the car in his shop for car owner Danny Payne. Melton was also the driver of the 246-inch, 2,200 horse-power machine. The car and driver travel 660 feet, one-eighth mile, in 3.98 seconds and reach a speed of 175 miles per hour. Melton said that’s two football fields and an end zone.
He competed in nine states to earn points toward the championship. The finale was at the Virginia Motorsports Park.
