McKenzie Elementary celebrated Read Across America week March 2-6 with themed dress-up days and visits from middle school students and community volunteers.

Leading into the week, community volunteers helped teachers decorate the school’s hallways with streamers and banners representing Dr. Seuss’ most popular characters, books and quotes.

Monday was Cat in the Hat Day, and students were encouraged to wear their favorite hats. Tuesday was Shirt Day. Students wore Dr. Seuss-themed shirts or shirts that read “Rebels Read.” Wednesday was Silly Sock Day, and Thursday was Tourist Tuesday. Friday, students and teachers alike showed out and dressed as their favorite book characters.

Middle school students and community volunteers also joined in on the fun, visiting classrooms Friday afternoon to read to students.

Also known as Dr. Seuss Week, Read Across America is an initiative started by the National Education Association (NEA) in 1997 to encourage reading. Each year, the week is timed to coincide with Dr. Seuss’ birthday, which is March 2.
