McKenzie Rebels, Lady Rebels Feted at Banquet
From the Apr 9, 2024 e-Edition
McKenzie (April 7) — McKenzie Rebels and Lady Rebels, cheerleaders, and parents were feted at a banquet to honor the players and cheerleaders at the conclusion of the 2023-24 season.
Coach John Wilkins coaches both teams. Wilkins has accepted a coaching position in middle Tennessee and is leaving the McKenzie program after 12 years in McKenzie. He had high praise for the players, fans, and community, noting that many businesses and individuals supported the programs - especially in bearing the costs of travel and lodging for state tournaments.
During his tenure, the girls earned two state titles in back-to-back season and the boys advanced to the state championship series.
He praised the administrators, his assistant coaches and the community. Wilkins noted it was a tough decision for his family to leave.
“A lot of my heart is in McKenzie,” said Wilkins.
Dru Emerson has been named as the new girls’ coach. A new coach for the men has not been named.
Hunter Herrin will remain as the assistant coach for the men’s program.
The girls team roster included: Savannah Davis, Mikaela Reynolds, Sophie Pate, Molly French, Charli Weatherford, Ashley Dunavant, Madeline Gottshall and Zayda Scates. Carli Beeler, Allie Mansfield, Jaleah Moore and Jacey Pinson were managers.
