Mustangs Take Two from Summertown, Advance to ‘Boro

HUNTINGDON (May 16) — The Huntingdon Mustangs knocked out the Summertown Eagles two straight games in the best of three series in the sectional round to advance to the TSSAA State Baseball Championship Series. The Mustangs took game one, 1-0, and game two, 5-2.
In the opening game, Easton Byars pitched a complete game, giving up three hits and no runs over seven innings, striking out nine and walking none. Grayson Burleson took the loss for Summertown. He went six innings, surrendering one run on five hits, striking out five and walking three.
Byars went 1-for-2 at the plate leading the team with one run batted in. Brady Warbritton set the tone at the top of the lineup, leading Huntingdon with two hits in three at bats. Warbritton stole two bases.
Burleson, Aiden Perez, and Jackson Bennett each collected one hit for the Eagles.
In the second game of the evening, the Mustangs took the lead, 4-1, in the top of the fifth thanks to home runs by Brady Warbritton, and Braylon Rich. Huntingdon scored one run in the top of the seventh on a solo home run to center field by Gray Eubanks.
Caleb Ezell earned the win for the Mustangs. They surrendered five hits and two runs over seven innings, striking out one and walking three. Kegan McCafferty took the loss for Summertown Varsity Eagles. They went four and two-thirds innings, giving up four runs (two earned) on six hits, striking out one and walking two.
Huntingdon collected nine hits in the game. Broox Bennett, Eubanks, and Rich each collected two hits for Huntingdon. Warbritton went 1-for-4 at the plate as he led the team with three runs batted in.
Cecil Williams and Zach Staggs were a force together in the lineup, as they each collected two hits for Summertown while hitting back-to-back. Matthew Luffman and Aiden Perez each drove in one run for the Eagles. Summertown Varsity Eagles turned one double play in the game.
The Mustangs play Smith County in the opening round on Tuesday, May 21 at 4 p.m. at Stewarts Creek High School.
