Mustangs Battle, Fillies Cruise in Waverly Sweep

HUNTINGDON (January 21) — Huntingdon High School hosted Waverly Tuesday for a pair of district basketball contests. The Fillies built a solid lead over three quarters, then dominated the fourth for a 74-42 victory. The Tigers kept it close through three frames, but the Mustangs pulled away at the end for a 69-55 win.
Huntingdon Fillies 74, Waverly Lady Tigers 42
The Fillies had a 15-11 lead after the opening frame, led by Delaney Byars with four points. Josey Stokes, Quinn Kelley and Grier Bartholomew each hit a three-pointer, and Sara Beth Smith had a pair. Lady Tiger Hope Damesworth scored eight, and Lacee Cotham hit a three.
Huntingdon had a 16-9 advantage in the second quarter, led by Stokes with eight points, including a pair of threes. Byars scored four, and Smith and Knox Bennett each had a pair. Damesworth scored all nine Waverly points, including a three-pointer. At the half, Huntingdon led 31-20.
The Fillies had a 17-14 edge in the third, led by Kelley with eight points, including a pair of threes. Byars scored six, Smith added a pair, and Bennett hit a free throw. Lady Tiger Tinlee Maples scored six. Cotham had five with a three, Carley McKlemurrey had a pair, and Damesworth hit a freebie. Entering the final frame, the Fillies led 48-34.
Huntingdon capped the win with a 26-8 tilt in the fourth, led by Bennett with eight points, including a pair of threes. Ellie Wilson scored five with a three, and Stokes had four points. Bartholomew, Claire Cary and Emalynn Maness each hit a three-pointer. Damesworth led Waverly with four points. McKlemurrey and Maples each added a pair.
Lady Tiger Hope Damesworth led all scorers with 22 points, including a three.
Josey Stokes led the Fillies with 15 points, including a pair of three-pointers. Delaney Byars scored 14. Quinn Kelley and Knox Bennett each had eleven points, Kelley with a trio of threes and Bennett with a pair.
Mustangs 69, Tigers 55
Huntingdon had a 15-13 lead after the first frame, led by Braylin Dearmon with seven points. Caleb Ezell and E.J. Lewis each scored three points, and Kenton Smith had a pair. Corben Ramsey led Waverly with six points. Malachi Burns scored five with a three-pointer, and Aiden Ralston had a pair.
The Tigers tied it with a 19-17 edge in the second quarter, led by Burns with eleven points. Kycen Damesworth and Tucker Rawlings each hit a three, and Ralston added a pair. Smith led the Mustangs with eleven, including a pair of threes. Lewis, Bryson Whiteside and Kylen Turner each had a pair. At the half, the score was knotted at 32-32.
Huntingdon pulled ahead again with an 18-13 advantage in the third, led by Smith with six points on a pair of threes. Lewis and Dearmon each scored four, and Ezell and Whiteside each added a pair. Rawlings scored six for Waverly on a pair of three-pointers. Damesworth also hit a three, and Burns and Ty Brooks each had a pair. Heading into the final frame, Huntingdon led 50-45.
The Mustangs sealed the win with a 19-10 tilt in the fourth, led by Smith and Ezell with six points each, Smith with a three. Lewis scored four, and Whiteside hit a three-pointer. Damesworth hit a Tiger three, and Ramsey also scored three points. Burns and Domonick Williams each had a pair.
Mustang Kenton Smith led all scorers with 25 points, including five three-pointers. E.J. Lewis scored 13, and Caleb Ezell and Braylin Dearmon each had eleven points.
Malachi Burns led Waverly with 20 points, including a three.
