Mustangs Snag Region 6-2A Road Win Against Cardinals

ADAMSVILLE (September 6) — After two weeks of preparation, the Huntingdon Mustangs were on the road opening up Region 6-2A football against the Adamsville Cardinals. The Mustangs easily handled the Cardinals taking home the 43-12 win.

Looking at the numbers, Huntingdon rushed the ball 49 times for 428 yards. Leading the ground game was Brady Warbritton with 16 carries for 197 yards followed by Gray Eubanks with 23 carries for 145 yards. Aiden Hilliard had 4 carries for 46 yards. The Mustangs had 22 first downs 20 of which came from rushing. Eubanks had two pass completions for 18 yards both giving Huntingdon first downs.

The Mustang defense held the Cardinals to 184 yards passing and 18 yards rushing.

On the opening drive, Huntingdon scored at the 8:28 mark on first and ten from the 29 yard line. The touchdown was Eubanks’ sixth of the season. Greyson Anderson tacked on the point after giving the Mustangs a 7-0 lead.

Huntingdon’s next offensive series resulted in another touchdown. From 10 yards out, Warbritton scored on a weep. Anderson added the PAT as the Mustangs led 14-0 with seconds to play in the first quarter.

Adamsville was able to score early in the second quarter. On a screen pass from Ben Hill to Avery McCormick, the receiver went 53 yards for the touchdown. The Cardinals attempted a fake PAT but were kept out of the end zone. With 10-43 to play in the second quarter, Huntingdon led 14-6.

Warbritton took the kickoff from the 18 yard line to the 39. Then on second and six, he went 57 yards for his second touchdown of the night. Anderson’s extra point was good but Adamsville was called offsides. Huntingdon elected to go for the two-point conversion and Eubanks put the Mustangs up 22-6 at the 9:29 mark of the second quarter.

For the remaining nine minutes of the half, it was a back-and-forth that resulted in no points.

Adamsville opened the second half going three and out. The Mustangs chiseled away at the clock. At the 5:53 mark, Warbritton crossed the goal line for this third TD. Anderson added the PAT as Huntingdon led 29-6.

The Cardinals scored on their next drive. Hill connected on passes to McCormick and Keelan Surratt. On second and six from the 15 yard line, Brayden McLemore was in the end zone. After a failed extra point, Huntingdon led 29-16.

On the kickoff, Wesley Williams returned the ball to the opposing 40 yard line. Warbritton then took it the rest of the way for a touchdown. Anderson put up the PAT as the Mustangs led 36-12 with 3:42 to play in the third quarter.

Huntingdon was back on offense to open the fourth quarter. At the 8:52 mark, Eubanks had his second touchdown of the night followed by Anderson’s PAT. The Mustangs were up 43-12 inducing the running clock rule.

The remaining minutes of the game moved quickly as the Mustangs and Cardinals avoided a rain delay. The final score was 43-12 in favor of Huntingdon.

Next Friday night, the Mustangs return home to Paul Ward Stadium in a non-regional against Columbia Academy. Game time is 7 p.m.
