Rebels Coast to Title with Two Big Wins

WAYNESBORO (May 9-10) — The McKenzie Rebels are Region 6A Baseball Tournament champions after two big wins. On Friday, they defeated Perry County 9-2. Saturday, they topped Hollow Rock-Bruceton Central 12-0. The tournament was hosted by Wayne County High School.
Semifinal: McKenzie Rebels 9, Perry County Vikings 2
McKenzie struck first with a run in the bottom of the second, then added four in the fourth. Perry County got on the board with a run in the top of the fifth, but the Rebels added four more in the home half. The Vikings plated a run in the sixth.
Rebel Lelan Gordon was 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs, a run scored and a stolen base. Cole Brown went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a stolen base. Craegen Travis was 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Fletcher Holt went 1-for-4 with a run scored. Xander Johnsey was 0-for-3 with a walk, two RBIs, two runs scored and two stolen bases. Maddox Shiell went 0-for-1 with a walk, two runs scored and two stolen bases.
Craegen Travis got the start for McKenzie, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits while striking out four and walking two in five and a third innings. Xander Johnsey threw the final inning and two-thirds, allowing no hits, runs or walks while striking out three.
Championship: Rebels 12, Central Tigers 0
McKenzie set the tone with seven runs in the bottom of the first, added two each in the second and third and scored one in the fourth to end the game after five innings.
Rebel Maddox Shiell was 1-for-2 with a home run, two RBIs and a run scored. Tate Surber went 2-for-4 with an RBI, a run scored and two stolen bases. Cooper Davidson was 1-for-1 with two walks and two RBIs. KD Cunningham went 1-for-1 with a walk and two RBIs. Lelan Gordon was 1-for-2 with a walk, two RBIs and a run scored. Cole Brown went 1-for-3 with a walk, an RBI, a run scored and two stolen bases. Xander Johnsey was 1-for-3 with a walk, a run scored and a stolen base. Fletcher Holt went 0-for-0 with four walks, three runs scored and a stolen base.
Two McKenzie pitchers combined for a no-hitter. Tate Surber got the start and the win, striking out nine and walking two in four innings. Cole Brown pitched the final inning, striking out two and walking none.
