Rebels Dominate Second Half for Quarterfinal Win at Frank Hughes

From the Mar 4, 2025 e-EditionCLIFTON (March 1) — Frank Hughes High School hosted the McKenzie Rebels Saturday for a Region 6A Boys Basketball quarterfinal. The Rebels trailed the Lions by five at the half but dominated down the stretch for a 58-48 victory to earn a rematch with McEwen in Tuesday’s semifinals, hosted by Wayne County High School.
McKenzie had a 13-8 edge after the opening frame, led by Landon Brown with six points on a pair of three-pointers. Tate Surber also hit a three, and Cole Brown and Craegen Travis each had a pair. Lion Devin Dicus scored four points, and Weston Lineberry and Hazen Simmons each had a pair.
Frank Hughes doubled up the Rebels 20-10 in the second quarter, led by D. Dicus with nine points. Simmons and Levi Tuck each hit a three, and Aiden Dicus also scored three points. Lineberry added a pair. Carter Kee led McKenzie with five points, including a three. L. Brown scored three points, and Surber added a pair. At the half, the Lions led 28-23.
The Rebels regained the lead with a 17-7 advantage in the third, led by Surber with eight points. Kee scored six on a pair of threes, and Eli Vinson also hit a three. Lineberry led the Lions with five points, including a three. D. Dicus added a pair. Entering the final frame, the Rebels led 40-35.
McKenzie sealed the win with an 18-13 tilt in the fourth, led by Surber with nine points. Kee scored five, and Travis had four points. Lineberry scored eight for Frank Hughes with a pair of threes, and D. Dicus had five points with a three.
Rebel Tate Surber led all scorers with 22 points, including a three-pointer. Carter Kee scored 16 with a trio of threes.
Devin Dicus led the Lions with 20 points, including a three. Weston Lineberry scored 17 with a trio of three-pointers.
