From the May 28, 2024 e-Edition
MURFREESBORO (May 23) — On Thursday, the McKenzie Rebels and the Hollow Rock-Bruceton Central Lady Tigers bowed out of the TSSAA Spring Fling after advancing to the Final Four.
The McKenzie Rebels suffered an opening round 2-1 loss to Gordonsville and were forced to work their way through the tournament from the losers’ bracket.
On Wednesday, May 22, the Rebels had to play a doubleheader. In the first game, they defeated Halls 3-1 and followed it up with a late-night rematch against Gordonsville winning 7-4.
The following day, much like the day before, it was do or die for the Rebels. To advance to the 1A championship game on Friday, McKenzie would have to defeat University School Johnson City twice. The Buccaneers proved too much for the Rebels, ending the series in one game, 5-1. Johnson City would go on to play Eagleville losing 10-0 in the sixth inning of the championship game.
The Central Lady Tigers lost 3-2 to Jo Byrns in the opening game. The following day, Wednesday, May 22, the Lady Tigers eliminated South Fulton 3-2 and Oliver Springs 7-4.
On Thursday, May 23, Central needed two wins to move on to the championship round. Both games were against Jo Byrns. In the first game, the Lady Tigers won 2-1. The second game went in favor of Jo Byrns 1-0 ending Central’s season. Gordonsville would defeat Jo Byrns 11-1 for the title.
More details on the Spring Fling will be available in a June 4 congratulatory section.
