Rebels Sweep Warriors in Home-Away Set

McKENZIE/McEWEN (April 14-15) — The McKenzie High School Rebels swept McEwen in convincing fashion in a pair of district baseball contests. Monday, the Rebels earned a 15-1 home win. Tuesday, they traveled for an 18-9 victory.
McKenzie Rebels 15, McEwen Warriors 1
In Monday’s home game, McKenzie struck first with a run in the bottom of the first, then added six in the second. McEwen plated a lone run in the top of the third, and the Rebels doubled their score with seven in the home half. McKenzie scored the final run in the fourth.
Rebel Xander Johnsey was 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and three runs scored. Cole Brown went 2-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored. Maddox Shiell was 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored. Cooper Davidson was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Tate Surber went 0-for-2 with two walks, two RBIs and two runs scored. Fletcher Holt was 0-for-2 with two walks, an RBI and a run scored. Craegen Travis went 0-for-2 with a walk and three RBIs.
Craegen Travis got the start for McKenzie, allowing one unearned run on one hit while striking out five and walking two in three and a third innings. Ripken Thompson threw an inning and two-thirds of relief, allowing no runs or hits while striking out two and walking none.
Rebels 18, Warriors 9
In Tuesday’s road game, McKenzie struck first with a run in the top of the first. McEwen responded with three in the home half to briefly take the lead. The Rebels plated six in the top of the second, but the Warriors tied it with four in the bottom half. McKenzie took the lead for good with six in the fourth and added another in the top of the fifth. McEwen’s final two runs came in the home half. The Rebels sealed the win with three in the sixth and one in the seventh.
Rebel Xander Johnsey was 1-for-6 with a home run, three RBIs and a run scored. Craegen Travis went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two walks, two RBIs and three runs scored. KD Cunningham was 2-for-4 with two doubles, three RBIs and a run scored. Cooper Davidson went 1-for-4 with a double, two walks, three RBIs and two runs scored. Cole Brown was 1-for-4 with two walks, two RBIs and three runs scored. Tate Surber went 1-for-4 with a double, two walks, an RBI and two runs scored. Lelan Gordon was 1-for-3 with two walks, an RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base. Fletcher Holt went 1-for-4 with two walks and two runs scored. Maddox Shiell was 0-for-0 with five walks, two RBIs, two runs scored and a stolen base.
Cole Brown got the start for McKenzie, allowing three earned runs on no hits with four walks in a third of an inning. Xander Johnsey threw five and two-thirds innings of long relief, allowing six runs (four earned) on 12 hits while striking out seven and walking one. Lelan Gordon pitched the final inning, allowing no runs on one hit with no walks.
