Rebels Top Irish in Opening Round, 7-2

McEWEN (April 30) — The McKenzie High School Rebels faced Houston County Wednesday in the opening round of the District 12A Baseball Tournament. A two-run home run in the first inning by Tate Surber set the tone for a 7-2 Rebel win.

McKenzie scored two runs in the first, one in the second and two each in the third and fourth. The Irish got on the board with a pair in the sixth.

Rebel Tate Surber was 2-for-3 with a home run, a walk, two RBIs, two runs scored and a stolen base. Cole Brown went 2-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored. Fletcher Holt was 1-for-2 with a double, a walk and two RBIs. Ace Brown batted 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. KD Cunningham and Lelan Gordon were each 1-for-3. Xander Johnsey was 0-for-2 with two walks, an RBI and a run scored.

Fletcher Holt earned the win for McKenzie, allowing two earned runs on four hits while striking out six and walking none in five innings. Xander Johnsey pitched the final two frames, allowing no runs on one hit while striking out two and walking none.
