From the Apr 22, 2025 e-Edition
HUNTINGDON (April 16) — Bruceton’s Sam Siegel and the Henry I. Siegel Company were the topic of a program by guest speaker Linda Smothers at the Huntingdon Historical Society meeting Wednesday.
Smothers gave background on the Siegel family, who immigrated from Europe during the first half of the 20th century.
She spoke about the H.I.S. factory that opened in Bruceton in 1940 and the opportunities it created.
In the latter part of the century, the company’s Chic Jeans brand was third only to Levi’s and Lee in popularity.
Siegel served as mayor of Bruceton for 16 years from 1958-1974 and died in 1975.
Smothers concluded her remarks with a collection of anecdotes about Siegel’s kindness and generosity.
