HUNTINGDON (June 16-22) — Several special guests paid the Carroll County Library a visit over the week, speaking with children as part of the library’s educational summer program.

Tuesday, Smokey Bear visited patrons of the library, continuing a longstanding tradition between the library and the State of Tennessee Forestry Division. Children’s Librarian Grace Hawkins began the morning with storytime, reading about Smokey Bear’s backstory.

Hawkins taught students about Smokey Bear’s three important rules to prevent forest fires:

  1. Only you can prevent wildfires.
  2. Always be careful with fire.
  3. Never play with matches or lighters.

Smokey Bear then joined the children in the library, accepting their many bear hugs and high-fives.

On Wednesday, Carroll County Mayor Joseph Butler took over storytime, reading two books that aptly fit the library’s dinosaur-themed summer reading program: ‘Thesaurus Rex’ and ‘Ten Minutes to Bed, Little Dinosaur.’

Lisa Costello, of Camp Costello Farms Honey, visited the library on Thursday, June 18, to teach summer reading program participants about bees and beekeeping.

The library also hosted Runaway Puppet Theater Monday, June 22.

Carroll County Library’s summer reading program continues this week with the following events: Terry Hedges Magic (June 23, 10:30 a.m.), Tot Time/Second Harvest (June 24, 10:30 a.m.) and Storybook Stroll at the Discovery Park of America (June 27, 10 a.m.).

The Carroll County Library is located at 625 High Street, Huntingdon, Tenn.
