McKENZIE (April 1) — On Wednesday, 264 McKenzie High School students ditched the classroom and spent the afternoon doing community service work for various businesses and organizations in Carroll County.

Some students helped landscape McKenzie’s downtown. Others helped at the Cancer Bake Auction, the Carroll County Humane Society, Carroll Lake, the Gordon Browning Museum and a nursing home.

Agriculture teacher Lindsey Parham helped students plant new flowers in downtown McKenzie’s gardening pots. Under her direction, six students planted an assortment of asparagus fern, coleus, sweet potato vine, petunia, marigold, geranium, lantana, dusty miller, dianthus and canna plants.

This community service opportunity was the students’ reward for taking the ACT exam in the morning. Senior students were also given the opportunity to tour colleges or job shadow during the afternoon.
