Surber Strikes Out 17 in Rebels' Senior Night Win

McKENZIE (April 25) — McKenzie High School hosted Stewart County Friday in a baseball battle of Rebel versus Rebel and celebrated Senior Night. Senior Tate Surber put on a show on the mound, striking out 17 as McKenzie took the win, 5-2.

Four seniors were honored prior to the first pitch, joined on the field by their parents: Gage Crosland, son of Cammy and Taylor Estes; KD Cunningham, son of Raven and Trell Tharpe; Tate Surber, son of Meredith and Tommy Surber; and Craegen Travis, son of Jennifer Travis and Brian Travis.

Stewart County struck first with a pair of runs in the top of the first, but McKenzie took the lead with three in the home half. McKenzie added a pair in the second for the final runs of the game.

McKenzie's Craegen Travis was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. KD Cunningham went 2-for-3. Cooper Davidson was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Xander Johnsey, Fletcher Holt and Lelan Gordon were each 1-for-3 with a run scored.

Stewart County's Ben Hendricks was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a stolen base.

Tate Surber earned the complete-game win for McKenzie, allowing two earned runs on four hits while striking out 17 and walking two.

Collin Howell took the complete-game loss for Stewart County, allowing five runs (three earned) on eight hits while striking out seven and walking none.
