McKenzie, West Carroll Locked in First, Fourth in Region 6-1A; Huntingdon’s 6-2A Wide Open
From the Oct 29, 2024 e-EditionWith one week to go in the regular season, teams find themselves in one of three positions.
Some have secured a playoff spot and are looking ahead to round one next week. Some have been eliminated from contention and are looking to end the year on a high note. For other teams, the season finale is a battle for their playoff lives and positioning.
Region 6-1A is settled, at least for McKenzie and West Carroll, who meet Friday in Atwood. McKenzie has secured the region championship, while West Carroll is locked into fourth place. A current deadlock for second and third will be resolved Friday in Erin as Houston County hosts McEwen.
Region 6-2A is an entirely different story. Milan and Huntingdon both sit at 5-1 in region play, with Milan holding the tiebreaker. JCM, Riverside and Peabody are all 4-2.
Huntingdon travels to Peabody, Riverside goes to Milan, and JCM hosts Gibson County, all on Thursday.
Despite the possibility that Halloween night could end with five teams deadlocked at 5-2, tiebreakers would ultimately leave one team on the outside looking in.
Huntingdon and Milan hold their destinies in their own hands. Either team can secure a home game in round one with a win. Should only one of those two win, that team will be the region champion. Both teams are guaranteed playoff spots.
Should Huntingdon and Milan both lose, things would get interesting. A likely JCM win against last-place Gibson County would mean a five-way tie.
In that scenario, Peabody would be on the wrong side of the tiebreakers with a 5-5 overall record.
Peabody has the narrowest path to a playoff appearance, needing a win over Huntingdon paired with losses by JCM and Riverside.
