TVA Board Approves New Data Center Rates
From the Aug 25, 2026 e-EditionMEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) Board of Directors has voted unanimously to establish a dedicated rate structure targeting the region’s growing boom of energy-intensive data centers. The decision, approved during the board’s quarterly business meeting in Memphis, seeks to shift more of the financial burden of massive grid expansion onto tech developers rather than residential power customers.
The new rate structure takes effect October 1, 2026, and will be phased in across three consecutive fiscal years. Under the approved guidelines, data centers will face an estimated 10% average rate increase compared to standard large-industrial customer rates, along with an additional surcharge for electrical loads exceeding 5 megawatts.
Balancing Growth and Grid Reliability
The move comes as rapid investments in artificial intelligence and cloud computing — including mega-scale campuses like Elon Musk’s xAI facility in Memphis — drive historic surges in electricity demand across the Southeast.
TVA officials framed the policy update around its commitment to a "Ratepayer Protection Pledge," designed to ensure private data center buildouts do not inflate monthly utility bills for the 10 million residents and small businesses across TVA’s seven-state territory.
