89 Tennessee Counties Report Unemployment Rates Below Five Percent

NASHVILLE (May 28) — 89 of Tennessee’s 95 counties reported unemployment rates below 5% in April, according to new data from the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development (TDLWD).

Two counties recorded rates of 5%, and four counties had rates of more than 5%.

In 36 counties, unemployment rates for April were down when compared with March rates. Rates were unchanged in 32 counties and increased in 27 counties.

Cheatham and Dickson counties reported the state’s lowest unemployment rates for April at 2.6%.  Both counties saw no change in their rates from the previous month. Seven counties — Macon, Knox, Sumner, Wilson, Williamson, Cannon, and Blount — followed with rates of 2.7%.

Maury County recorded the highest unemployment rate in the state. At 6.1%, Maury’s rate was 1 percentage point above its March rate. Lewis County reported the second-highest rate for the month at 5.8%, an increase of eight-tenths of a percentage point over March.  Perry County followed with a rate of 5.3%, a decline of one-tenth of a percentage point.

Data released last week showed that Tennessee’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in April was 3.6%. Unlike the statewide rate, county rates are not seasonally adjusted.

TDLWD has compiled an analysis of the April 2026 county unemployment data.
