ATWOOD (October 18) — West Carroll High School hosted Camden Friday for a non-region football contest. The visiting Lions dominated the first half, 41-0. The War Eagles played well in the second half, holding Camden scoreless but ultimately falling, 41-16.
It was “Pink-Out” night for breast cancer awareness, and the West Carroll cheerleaders delivered flowers to survivors in attendance between the first two quarters.
Also, first responders were recognized on the field during halftime.
Camden won the coin toss and received the opening kickoff.
The Lions set the tone with a nine-play, 56-yard scoring drive capped by a two-yard touchdown run by Gage Lee. Eli Latendress ran it in for two points, and Camden led 8-0 with eight minutes to play in the first frame.
The War Eagles couldn’t get any traction with the run game and turned the ball over on downs at their 37.
Back-to-back penalties pushed Camden back into their own territory, but Isaiah Goodwin threw to Issac Moore for a 65-yard touchdown. War Eagle Mason Taylor made the stop on the two-point conversion, and the Lions led 14-0 with five minutes remaining in the first.
West Carroll went three-and-out on their second possession. A low snap on the punt attempt forced Jace Hammett to scramble with the ball, giving Camden a short field.
Moore took the first snap 20 yards for the score. The PAT was successful, and the Lions led 21-0 with two minutes left in the opening frame.
The ensuing kickoff was misplayed by the War Eagles and recovered by Camden at the 20.
Two plays later, Lion Jake Reynoldson threw to Moore for a 20-yard touchdown. The kick was good, and Camden led 28-0 with a minute to play in the first.
The War Eagles went three-and-out again as the first quarter ended and punted to begin the second. Moore returned the punt 65 yards to the end zone, but a penalty brought the play back to the West Carroll 44.
Reynoldson ran for nine, then Nathan Redman went ten. Lee followed with a 26-yard touchdown. Another good PAT made it 35-0 with ten minutes remaining in the first half.
A touchback started the War Eagles at their 20, and they soon faced third-and-eleven. Quarterback Zac Fowler threw to Hammett for 31 yards to midfield. Zach Hames moved the chains again with a pair of runs. A pass from Fowler to Hammett and a scramble run by Fowler, combined with a Camden penalty, gave West Carroll another first down at the 12. A pair of incomplete passes followed by two short gains by Taylor turned the ball over to the Lions at the 7.
Lee gained 17 yards, then Reynoldson threw to Moore for a 76-yard touchdown. An incomplete pass doomed the two-point attempt, and Camden led 41-0 with a minute and a half to go in the first half.
The War Eagles managed three plays before halftime.
A strong second half for West Carroll began with a good return by Taylor to the 38. Taylor ran it twice for a first down at midfield, then Trinden Kirby took it 50 yards to paydirt. Taylor ran for two points, and the Camden lead was 41-8 early in the third.
West Carroll pulled off the onside kick, with Fowler making the recovery at the War Eagle 47.
Taylor, Kirby and Hames each made gains for a first down, but the drive stalled and Fowler was sacked on fourth down.
Lion Amaury Rogers ran for five and then 22 yards before Reynoldson’s pass was tipped and intercepted by War Eagle Eli Travelstead.
Kirby started the West Carroll drive with a six-yard run. Taylor ran twice for 17 total yards. Hames made a short gain, then Taylor moved the chains on two tries. After a false start, Fowler threw to Hammett for 40 yards, then Taylor punched it in from four yards out. He also ran the two-point conversion, and the Lion lead was 41-16 halfway through the fourth quarter.
Camden ran eight plays on the ground, earning a pair of first downs, to run out the remainder of the clock.
West Carroll travels to Memphis Thursday to face KIPP for a non-region game. Kickoff is 7 p.m.
