War Eagles Outslug Tomcats, 16-11
From the Apr 21, 2026 e-EditionATWOOD (April 17) --- West Carroll High School baseball hosted Haywood Friday afternoon. A pair of big innings and 23 stolen bases gave the host War Eagles a 16-11 win over the Tomcats.
Haywood struck first with four runs in the top of the first. West Carroll cut the deficit in half with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second. The third inning was a wash as both teams plated three. The War Eagles soared ahead with six runs in the home half of the fourth. The Tomcats clawed back with a pair in the top of the fifth, but West Carroll pushed across five in the fifth. Haywood managed two runs in the top of the seventh.
War Eagle R.Q. Thompson was 2-for-3 with a double, two walks, an RBI and four stolen bases. J.W. Rushing was 3-for-5 with an RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases. Briggs West was 1-for-1 with a double, two RBIs, a run scored and a stolen base. Sawyer Jackson was 1-for-2 with a double, a walk, two RBIs and a run scored. Eli Bryant was 2-for-4 with a walk, an RBI, three runs scored and three stolen bases. Harlan Hames was 0-for-2 with three walks, three runs scored and four stolen bases. Chance Weatherford was 0-for-0 with three walks, an RBI, two runs scored and four stolen bases. Hayden Wingo was 0-for-2 with two walks, a run scored and two stolen bases. Ethan Baker was 0-for-4 with a walk, an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base. Caleb Vermillion was 0-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base.
Chance Weatherford got the start for West Carroll, allowing four earned runs on no hits and seven walks in two-thirds of an inning. R.Q. Thompson pitched four and a third innings of relief, allowing five runs (one earned) on three hits while walking six and striking out four. Harlan Hames threw the final two frames, allowing two earned runs on two hits while walking none and striking out five.
Four Haywood pitchers combined to allow 16 runs (13 earned) on nine hits with 13 walks and seven strikeouts.
