TREZEVANT/ATWOOD (November 11) — West Carroll Elementary School and West Carroll Junior/Senior High School held their annual Veterans Day programs on Monday.
The events, which took place at 11 a.m., brought together students, faculty, and community members to pay tribute to those who have served our nation.
At West Carroll Junior/Senior High School, the gymnasium was filled with an attentive audience as guest speaker Mike Mulligan addressed the crowd. Sgt. Mulligan addressed the proper treatment of veterans and the sacrifices they make for their families, all for love of country. Dr. Adam Douglas, principal, remarked, “We appreciate Mr. Mulligan sharing his first-hand experiences with our students.”
The high school program, hosted by student government members, included a special recognition of veterans in attendance. Following the ceremony, honored guests were escorted to a private reception prepared by the West Carroll Culinary Arts students.
The West Carroll Elementary School program featured two distinguished guest speakers: Wayne Barrentine, an Army veteran, and James Mealer, a National Guard veteran. Both speakers shared their experiences and the importance of service to one’s country.
Mr. Jonathan Wheeler led students in a musical tribute, featuring renditions of “Allegiance Rap” and “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Knox Crews delivered a stirring performance of the National Anthem, while Harlynn Vernon led the Pledge of Allegiance with poise beyond her years. The event also showcased the musical talents of Aria Cecchini and Hazel Mitchell as soloists.
One veteran in attendance summed up the sentiment of the day, “Events like these remind us why we served. It’s all about preserving the freedoms that allow these children to grow up in our great country.”
