WCES Celebrates Read Across America Week
From the Mar 25, 2025 e-Edition
West Carroll Elementary School celebrated Read Across America Week from March 3 to 7 with a variety of engaging activities designed to foster a love for reading among students. The week was filled with excitement as students participated in Dr. Seuss Mad Libs, Buddy Reading, Drop Everything and Read time, and a Reading Power Hour.
Throughout the week, classes competed within their grade levels to see who could read the most books or earn the highest number of Accelerated Reader points. The winning classes will be rewarded with extra recess time as a recognition of their hard work and dedication to reading.
The celebration culminated on Friday with “Be Our Guest” day, where students had the unique opportunity to listen to guest readers. These special guests included administrators from the West Carroll School District and senior students from the Class of 2025. Additionally, 3rd-6th grade students participated in themed dress-up days inspired by Dr. Seuss books. Themes included Crazy Sock Day for “Fox in Socks,” Favorite Hat Day for “The Cat in the Hat,” wearing green for “Green Eggs and Ham,” and sporting their favorite colors for “My Many Colored Days.”
The week concluded with a College and Career Day, aligning with the overall theme, “Oh, The Places You’ll Go.” Students were encouraged to dress in outfits representing their future aspirations. To make the event even more interactive, students received cards at the beginning of the week that were punched each time they participated in the dress-up days. At the end of the week, those with five punches were entered into a drawing, with one lucky winner from each grade receiving a special gift bag.
A special thank you goes to those who worked hard to organize this literacy-promoting event, especially Mrs. Lisa Brown, 5th grade ELA teacher, whose coordination and dedication made the week a memorable success.
