Three Weakley County Schools Named State Reward Schools
From the Dec 10, 2024 e-EditionWeakley County Schools certainly has much to celebrate this year, and the latest news is no exception: three district schools – Dresden Elementary School, Gleason School, and Westview High School - have been named Tennessee Reward Schools by the Tennessee Department of Education (TDOE). Based on data from the 2023-24 academic year, these schools have earned this recognition through outstanding performance according to the State’s strict scoring matrix. A Reward School ranking means that the school scored in the top 5% for achievement or growth on standardized tests.
TDOE Reward Schools are among the top performers in the state, ranking high in several key areas, including TCAP achievement scores, growth, chronic absenteeism rates, graduation rates, and English language learner proficiency. These schools have proven their excellence by consistently meeting high standards and achieving remarkable results across many different areas of performance.
Dresden Elementary School Principal Melanie Needham celebrates a third year as a Reward School and shared her pride in her students, staff, and teachers in working together to reach the goal.
“Being named a Reward School shows what we can do when teachers, students, families, and staff work together,” Needham shared. “Everyone has an important part in making our school a place where learning and success happen every day and receiving this recognition for the third year in a row shows how seriously we take that responsibility.”
Lee Lawrence, Principal of Gleason School, also shared his pride in the honor, saying, “Being named a Reward School is a proud moment for all of us and truly shows what can happen when we all work together for a common goal. It highlights our dedication to teamwork, our commitment to accountability and excellence, and the belief that success is within reach for every student.”
Westview Principal Brian Allen also celebrated the achievement, stating, “Westview is thrilled to receive this recognition. Earning the Reward School ranking reflects the dedication, hard work, and collaboration within our school community. From our passionate teachers to our determined students, supportive families, and committed staff, everyone played a part in this incredible achievement.”
Director of Schools Jeff Cupples shared that he believes this achievement continues to highlight the positive successes of our schools working together to help each student achieve their best.
“This is an achievement for everyone to celebrate. Each of these schools has dedicated their time and effort to our students, and as a district, we couldn’t be prouder of their devotion. The support our students receive is huge, and these achievements show how much of a positive difference that makes,” said Cupples.
