TREZEVANT — Students at West Carroll Elementary School recently presented their Early American Civilizations Codex Projects, highlighting their learning about ancient cultures.

The fifth graders displayed their handmade codices, inspired by the early books created by Maya scribes who painted glyphs on folded bark paper. This project concluded the Maya, Aztec, and Inca unit of the Amplify CKLA curriculum.

Each student’s codex included explanatory writing on various cultural aspects such as farming methods, architecture, and social classes. The projects featured a paragraph, picture, and caption for each civilization studied.

“Our students have gained a better understanding of these significant cultures while practicing their writing skills” said Mrs. Lisa Brown, fifth-grade ELA teacher.

Principal Williams noted the importance of such projects in making history accessible and engaging for students. “It’s rewarding to see our students actively involved in their learning,” she said.

The Early American Civilizations Codex Project not only reinforced historical knowledge but also allowed students to express their creativity and understanding of ancient societies. This hands-on approach has proven effective in enhancing student engagement and comprehension in history.
