#1 Seed Wildcats Punch Ticket to the Final Site

McKENZIE — Behind a blistering first half and a resilient closing stretch, the No. 1-seeded Bethel Wildcats Men’s Soccer Team secured its place at the national final site Saturday afternoon, outlasting Union Commonwealth 2–1 at Walter Butler Stadium.

Bethel wasted no time asserting its top-seed status, pouring on pressure from the opening whistle and outshooting the visitors 16–5 in the first half. The breakthrough came in the 13th minute when Stanley Grand-Pierre slipped a perfectly weighted ball across the box to Freddie Pickford, who buried the opener to ignite the home bench.

Just over twenty minutes later, defender Ishmael Fuseini doubled the Wildcats’ lead, smashing home a set-piece delivery from Roberto Rangel in the 35th minute to put Bethel firmly in control.

Union Commonwealth refused to go quietly. After regrouping at halftime, they found life in the 62nd minute when Donte Campbell headed in a service from Patrick Taylor, trimming the deficit to 2–1 and shifting momentum.

The visitors launched wave after wave of attacks, firing 11 second-half shots, but Bethel goalkeeper Diego Camargo matched the moment with seven saves, three of them late, full-stretch denials.

Bethel’s back line—anchored by Fuseini, Sa-Jar Blair, and Enock Owusu—held strong through a physical final 20 minutes that featured multiple cautions and tense midfield battles. The Wildcats finished with a commanding 30–16 shot advantage and a 7–2 edge in corner kicks, evidence of their sustained control even as the score tightened.

With the victory, Bethel improves to 14-1-2 and advances to the national tournament final site, keeping championship aspirations alive. Union Commonwealth concludes a strong season at 14-4-4, their rally falling just short against the nation’s top seed.

It is the 12th appearance in the nationals for Bethel. The Cats are 11-8-1 all-time in the tournament. Bethel won the national championship in 2007.

Bethel has won five straight matches. The Cats outscored their opponents 13-3 during the win streak.

With a 4-1-1 mark, the Cats won their first-ever Mid-South Conference championship.
