  • Tennessee Unemployment Near Historic Low

    NASHVILLE (October 19) — Tennessee’s unemployment rate for September 2023 inched up slightly from the state’s all-time low rate of 3.1%. Data from the Department of Labor and Workforce Development (TDLWD) showed the seasonally adjusted rate increased by 0.1 of a percentage point to 3.2% during the month.

    McKenzie Church of Christ Free Spaghetti Supper The McKenzie Church of Christ is hosting a FREE spaghetti supper at their building on Highland Drive on Thursday, November 2, 5-7 p.m. (or until all food is gone). Dining-in is available or drive-thru if you want to pick it up and go home to eat. The menu consists of spaghetti, crackers, dessert and a drink (drink for dining in only).     MEMPHIS (October 23) — The University of Tennessee Health Science Center’s College of Nursing has received a $364,502 grant from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) that will allow a specialized education outreach to health care professionals in the Mid-South Delta region to improve care for patients with sickle cell disease.

    TRENTON (October 14) — On Saturday, the City of Trenton honored longtime coach and city alderman, Frank Gibson. Pedestrian Park in downtown Trenton was The Frank Gibson Pedestrian Park. Gibson spearheaded the creation of Pedestrian Park, turning a vacant lot in the heart of the downtown area into what is now one of the most utilized and beautiful amenities the city has to offer.

    The McKenzie Elementary School’s Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) is hosting their annual Fall Festival Fundraiser on Saturday, October 28 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at McKenzie Elementary School. There is no entry fee and this event is open to the public. There is a Silent Auction full of themed baskets and local business certificates and goodies, a Cake Walk, a Costume Contest and prizes for grades Pre-K-4th, food, sweet treats and games. They will also be crowning the 2023 Fall Festival King and Queen.

    HUNTINGDON (October 18) — During Wednesday’s Huntingdon Board of Education meeting, four teachers were granted tenure at the recommendation of Director Dr. Jonathan Kee. The four individuals, Leeah Bergman (HMS Math), Ryan Vincent (HMS History), Lesley White (HMS ELA) and Candice Wilson (HPS Pre-K), meet the requirements from Tennessee’s Department of Education.

  • Carroll County Man Arrested On Tax Evasion

    McKENZIE (October 10) — The Special Investigations Section of the Tennessee Department of Revenue conducted the investigation that led to the arrest of 28-year-old Alec Akin. Akin was charged with three counts of tax evasion and one count of theft for filing false documents related to transactions on personal vehicles.

    McKENZIE (October 21) — The McKenzie Police and Fire Departments worked with Hometown Hangout to raise funds for Christmas for Kids. Firefighters and police officers were on hand taking part in a meet-and-greet with community members with police vehicles and fire trucks on the scene. They also helped serve and work the carry-out orders. A bounce house and slide were also provided for the youth.

    McKENZIE (October 20) — The Rebels continued to roll Friday night as they hosted Freedom Preparatory Academy of Memphis taking their eighth win of the season. McKenzie won 38-8 improving to 8-1 on the regular season and 4-0 in Region 6-1A.

  • Huntingdon Mustangs Stifle Camden Lions, 61-13

    CAMDEN (October 20) — On Friday night Huntingdon traveled to Camden for a region match-up against the Lions. With their decisive victory, the Mustangs clinched the number one spot in Region 6-2A for the 2023 season. Leading 48-0 at the half, Huntingdon easily outplayed Camden both offensively and defensively. Camden’s only points came in the second half against Huntingdon’s second team under a running clock. The win is the eighth straight for Huntingdon, now 6-0 in region play, with a season record of 8-1.

    McKENZIE (October 21) — It was a day of comebacks at Wildcat Stadium Saturday. Hundreds of alums came back for Homecoming and the Bethel football team rewarded them with a second half comeback of their own to beat Cumberland University 24-7.

    McKENZIE (October 20) — The Bethel Lady Wildcats won for the fifth time in their last six outings with a 2-0 win over No. 24 Campbellsville Friday night in McKenzie. It was the fourth straight for the Cats who moved to 9-2 overall and 4-1 in the MSC. It was the eighth meeting between the two programs with the series now tied at 4-4.

    Vandalism — On October 22, Officer Darren Davis received a call about a school bus having three broken windows. Davis was informed the bus was parked Friday afternoon and the windows were intact. The following day, the driver noticed the windows were broken. A rock, believed to have been used, was found at the scene. Neighbors are supposed to check security cameras to see if anything was captured in the footage. Carroll County Schools will be contacted about the incident.

    Domestic Assault — Juan Antonio Cruz, 49, of Trezvant, was arrested for domestic assault, interference with emergency calls, and vandalism on October 14. Deputy Hardin responded to a call regarding a female texting her friend stating she was being beaten by her boyfriend. Upon arrival, he could hear screaming and yelling inside the residence. Once inside the home, the victim stated she was trying to get the defendant to leave. The victim stated Cruz slapped her on both sides of her face and broke her iPhone so she couldn’t call 911. The defendant was asked to quit yelling multiple times without compliance and then got arrested.

    Domestic Assault — Richard B. Hinson, 45, of Huntingdon, was arrested on October 10 for domestic assault. The victim, Desiree Kail, said that Hinson threw her off the bed onto the floor and pinned her to the ground after a heated argument. A witness also said that Hinson physically assaulted Kail. After all the information needed was gathered, Officer Roberts escorted the defendant to Carroll County Jail on charges of domestic assault.
